Doing our part

I was just informed of a small oversight on our web store and in all of our information and, since I manage the web site, I felt it was my responsibility to correct it. With all of the focus on "Carbon Credits" and "Global Warming" these days I feel it is important to note that since opening in 1971 The Hermit's Hut has been as green as any store can be.

  • We recycle all of our cardboard, paper, and plastic products in ecologically efficient ways to help reduce our impact on the environment.
  • The boxes we ship out are usually the same boxes we got in from a manufacturer with our products, we simply cut and resize them to the dimensions of your orders.
  • Any boxes which are unsafe for transportation are sent to a cardboard recycling facility.
  • All the paper in our store which does not carry personal information is recycled either here, for interoffice memo's, or sent to a paper recycling facility.
  • Any paper containing personal information is shredded, in our office and by trained staff, and is later destroyed or utilized in a secure and ecologically friendly manner.
  • Our staff are all advocates of cleaning up trails and we offer incentives to in-store customers who consistently clean up after themselves and other people on their outdoor adventures.
  • When it is feasible and safe to do so, at least 30% of our staff ride their bicycles to work to help reduce their impact on CO2 emissions.
  • During our Friday lunch barbeque's we utilize an efficient propane grill and non-disposable utensils to reduce our waste output.

Basically, we try to do our part and set an example in our community so others can enjoy the same outdoors we do and we have been doing so for over 36 years.

Everything except the lack of the beach...Anyway, get outside, ride a bike, float down the river! Whatever it is you plan on doing go ahead and tell us about it. We want to hear stories and see pictures. So go ahead...we're waiting

The eclipse,

I just stopped in to mention the lunar eclipse the other morning, it was amazing! Apparently it won't look that close for a long time, so it was great to see it!

I also wanted to mention that if you phone in an order it's very likely you'll get a deal whether or not an item is on sale in the web store. The reason behind this is the fact that we are very lonely.

All kidding aside, the boss just likes us to give personal customer service and it's a little hard to do that through the staleness of the internet.

So give us a call, it could save you some money.

Questions? Comments? The full set of hardback Harry Potter books? Email me: acorbelli@hermitshut.com

We had too vacuum again...sounds like it's time to get out the squirt bottle...speakin of squirt, does anyone remember that beverage? What ever happened to it? It was pretty good sort of tart. It was good to dilute my prune juice, you know to stay uh....regular. Nevermind. "Hey Charlie get off the glass case"!!

Hermit's Hut Mobile

Ever get stuck without a laptop or computer for internet access but realize you wanted to do price comparisons? Waiting for a red-eye with a dead laptop battery and wanting to order a peice of outdoor equipment for your trip next week? You need Hermit's Hut Mobile.

Hermit's Hut Mobile, powered by GreaseIt Technology, is our entire online catalogue, complete with descriptions, prices and images, available on your XHTML-MP supported device. Motorola cell phones, BlackBerry's, any other device running an Openwave, or other XHTML-MP, browser.

XHTML-MP (eXtensible Hyper-Text Markup Language - Mobile Profile) is a reduced set of XHTML, using the same rules as proper XHTML code but allowing for smaller files for faster mobile downloads. There are other, similar, standards used in mobile devices (such as WAP, an extension of XML, and cHTML) but full support of those devices is not currently complete.

How does this all work? Fire up your XHTML-MP capable browser and direct it to http://mobile.hermitshut.com, browse around and if you find something you like place a request. Fill out your name and contact info, as well as preferred contact times and method and send it in. We'll pull the item from stock and wait for you to contact us via your preferred method. Once positive contact has been made with us we will discuss payment methods, shipping arrangements and any other necessary information to complete the transaction (a ten minute or less phone call, in most cases, or a few emails if preferred).

Your security is preserved by the lack of transmitted personal data and the fact that you place the request and you decide when to call/email and share with us your information. Remember: until there is positive contact from you, we will not contact you to get personal info.

If no contact is made within 48 hours of initial request placement we will return the item to our shelves and destroy your contact information, to preserve your information security.

Let me know what you think, or if you'd like to try out GreaseIt Technology on your own website to deploy mobile commerce.

Summer Time!

Here in Northern California the summer weather is in, barring a few cold fronts between now and June we have basically entered into the Summer season!

It's sunny and warm (a little too warm for my likings, but I like it cold) and perfect for finishing up the projects that sat over winter (lawn mowing, pool maintenance, garage cleaning, etc...).

Just remember to stay cool and hydrated, don't wait until you feel hot and thirsty to get a drink of water, and wear protective clothing as well as sunblock (there are lines of clothing and hats with SPF ratings of 15 or more). Heat exhaustion is a very serious condition, leading to heat stroke if untreated.

So please, enjoy the weather and ability to get your house, yard, and body into shape but remember to do it safely.

As a side note, a few of us at the store do home improvement projects over the summer. Flooring, roofing and countertops are on some people's agendas. I plan on expanding my patio and building a brick barbeque and oven near our pool. We'd like to know what you're planning for this summer. What home improvements are you making? Any tips or advice? Let us know!

New Hermit's Hut Site. Whaddya Think?

Hey all,

We have recently been redesigning the website to make it easier for you to get around. Please write back and let us know what you like, what you don't like and what we can do better. I mean, I could take a picture of me hugging a cactus wearing nothing but a cowboy hat and a smile, but I don't think that's the direction we want to go.

Go ahead and show us some love. info@hermitshut.com

Good Sunday!

After a few days of interesting weather here in the north state (a nickname for northern california for those not "in the know") we are having a beautiful Sunday. What better way to celebrate than getting outside? I know we are. While Bob (the owner) is stuck in the store working we're all out doing our own things, hiking, bicycling, and just plain enjoying the day.

I'm off to an early afternoon run, but then it's back to finish taxes (they're due!) and study for my classwork. So, if it's as nice there as it is here shut off your computer, go outside and play. You'll thank me later.
