From The Redding Record Searchlight - By Debra Moore Bob Clearie is the 74-year-old owner of the Hermit's Hut, a Redding shop that specializes in ski, snowboard and outdoor equipment. Bob works out year-round, usually seven days a week. "If I skip a couple of days, I feel it," he said. "If I didn't work out regularly, I would be taking pain pills and I certainly wouldn't be skiing." Clearie divides his workouts between two gyms and a variety of activities. Not only does he do cardio and strengthening work, but he has added Pilates to his routine. Three mornings a week, he takes a Pilates class at Cutting Edge Fitness. "Pilates is all about core strength and most people don't work on it," he said. Typically, Clearie will do an hour of Pilates followed by a half-hour of weight lifting. The exercise allows him to order his favorite double chocolate mocha - without guilt. Clearie says that anyone preparing for ski season should begin now and focus on cardio work and strengthening the leg muscles. He said it's also important to stretch those muscles. While Clearie is concerned about protecting his knees when he skis, it's the collarbone and wrists that worry him when he snowboards. He also wears a helmet. Injuries are always a possibility, but Clearie said his workouts help him minimize the risk. They also keep him in great shape year-round. "I'm only 2 pounds heavier than when I graduated from high school," he said. Workouts are also good for his psyche. "On Sundays I hop on the treadmill and watch a good football game or NASCAR; it takes away the stress of running a retail business," he said.
